Vetta Amiata (The cross in the top of Monte Amiata) To visit:
Built in 1910, the monumental iron cross crowns the summit, 1738 mt. high, from which visitors can get one of the largest view in Tuscany. Despite the presence of beeches that partially block the view, in clear sky days, looking westwards we can spot the Tyrrhenian sea, Mount Argentario, Mount Uccellina and the mountains of ElbaMontecristo and giglio Island. Southwards we can see Mount Labbro nearby, Lake Bolsena waters, Mounts Cimini, and the hills around Vico Lake. Montalcino towers appear northwards, together with the undulations of the Sienese "Crete" and even the city of Siena. In winter clear sky, Mount Abetone and Apuan Alps are seen. Finally, looking estwards, the appenines appear. Beyond Lake Trasimeno waters and Radicofani sharp fortress, Casentino mountains, Mount Catria, Mount Cucco, Sibillini mountains, Mount Terminillo, Gran Sasso and Velino stand one next to the other. A landscape that includes 4 of the 21 Italian national parks. |
